Organize a Stress Free Move

The following is a guest post by Action Moving.

Moving can be an extremely stressful and complicated event if it is not properly planned. Moving should be the sign of a new chapter in your life. Unfortunately, more often than not, it ends up being a bad memory, but moving does not have to be stressful. Proper planning combined with organization and delegation can turn what would be a bad situation, into something that is stress free for everyone involved. Action Moving has some great tips on how to organize a stress free move.

It is best to have it written down if more than one person will be involved. Set detailed deadlines and follow them as best you can. Most importantly, start your moving process as early as possible. The more time you have to move, the better attention you can pay to the details of it. Rushing a move rarely ends well. Start by packing the storage items in your home. These are the items that normally remain in boxes and are rarely used. If you will not need those before your moving date, pack and label them well.

Contact Service Providers

This is also the time to call your utility and cable companies to get your services set up, transferred or cancelled . Some services can take over a week to activate and can be quite heavily booked, so the more advance notice you can give them, the better chance you have of getting the installation date you prefer. Some companies may also charge a rush fee if a service has to be set up right away. Set up a change of address notification at your local post office , and provide your credit card companies, bank, other billing companies, with your new address. Going paperless with your bills is another option as well, this will prevent potential missing mail and is an environmentally friendly alternative.

Carefully Pack & Label Your Belongings

Closer to your move in date, pack the items you use, but can live without for a short while. Again, be careful to pack and label your items accordingly. Clearly label breakables and pack each item securely enough that if a box falls or flips over, the contents will remain stable. Using your towels, sheets and blankets as packing material will also cut down on the amount of supplies you need to purchase. A few days away from your moving date, pack the remaining contents of your home. Be sure to leave out medications and other necessary items. Keep those on you at all times during the move.

Moving

Decide if you want to invest the time in moving on your own or hiring a professional moving company. If you are hiring a company, contact them for a quote and to determine the extent of their services. Schedule a moving time that best accommodates your schedule.

Re-confirm commitment times and dates with your friends or family if you’ve decided to go that route. The moving company will contact you to confirm all the necessary details of your move before the big day. If you are using a rental vehicle, confirm the pickup and drop-off time as well as the type of vehicle you are renting and any additional costs for mileage.

Do as much cleaning as possible to avoid having to do it all in one day after the move. You will be busy enough without having to travel back and forth between residences. Formulate a detailed itinerary of your moving day.

On the day of your move, take charge. This is especially important if there is a group of people involved. Get involved but also monitor the items being moved, the order they are being moved in and where in the new residence they are being placed. However, it is important to remember the difference between being in charge and being in the way. Delegation is underestimated on moving day. These people in your home are there to help you. Trust that they are doing the jobs you set out for them to do.

If you hired a moving company, inform them of where you want your items placed in your new home and if there are any special notes they need to know about. If your friends are helping you, have a pre-moving meeting, preferably with donuts and coffee to start the day on a friendly note, and then trust that they will do as planned.
With enough advanced planning, moving can be a joyous time, signaling a positive change in your life. Plan well and keep organized and your move will be a festive, stress free event.
