A Beautiful Day in Edmonton

A few weeks ago we had an amazing day in Edmonton and I just have to share it with our readers. I arranged a canoe trip down the North Saskatchewan for a group of friends and family and it was incredible. Our river valley is a natural wonder and adds so much to our city. Seeing the parks, neighbourhoods, bridges and the downtown skyline from the river gave me a completely new perspective. It is so quiet and peaceful, it’s like stepping back in time.

It was also the 50th anniversary of a very memorable trip my dad took as a young camp councelor in 1960 when he paddled over 200 miles from Rocky Mountain House to Edmonton in 4 days. Being from Ontario he hadn’t been back on the river since, and it was a very special day for my parents and me. So thanks to the city of Edmonton for keeping our river valley beautiful and I highly recommend a trip down the river to anyone! Contact Edmonton canoe for info and options, they were great!

Sounds like fun! I think the river valley is the best part of Edmonton and is sometimes taken for granted. Most cities have rivers but few can match the parks, trees and wildlife of Edmonton’s. Definitely kudos to Edmonton for keeping it great.

I’m from Australia and I am blown away by the quality of the water in your city rivers. I assume the snow run off keeps them looking fresh. I lived in Calgary for a while and during my first week there I went swimming in the river. People looked at me like I had 3 heads for doing that. Even in Edmonton I don’t see people using the river as much as what I thought they would. Good on you Sheldon for showing the way! I’ll make more of an effort to get down there and enjoy the water too.

It’s a great trip! We have some kayaks at the cabin now and I’m thinking of taking them down the river, but there’s something more comfortable about a canoe.

Totally off topic but you guys would like to know that there is a war of words between Garth Turner and Bob Truman right now.

Pretty sad & useless given that they’ll never agree.

There is an event this month called ‘paddling for compassion’, in which you can do this trip for about $30, which includes a bus trip from Edmonton to Devon breakfast, lunch and BBQ & entertainment in the evening. All you need to do is get $200 sponsorship for the charity. This is a brilliant trip. Go online and type in paddling for compassion.
