Earth Hour – Tonight 8pm

You may have heard of it or you may not have, but tonight at 8pm everyone is asked to turn off their lights. Sonic – an Edmonton radio station – has been promoting the event and will have one hour of "unplugged" music at 8pm tonight.

Earthhour

The idea of earth hour is to make a statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal fired electricity. On March 31 2007, 2.2 million residents of Sydney, Australia turned off their lights for one hour reducing energy consumption in the city by 10%. This year they’ve taken the movement global and I hope you’ll consider turning off your lights for an hour tonight. It’s just about the easiest event to participate in that I’ve ever heard of…you don’t have to do anything, just turn off the lights and enjoy!

If you really want to get on the energy reduction band wagon stop by the Riverdale NetZero house too! Comesee what’s new at the Riverdale NetZero house, from active and passivesolar heating, grid-dependent solar systems, ultra-highly insulatedair-tight walls and high performance windows.

This environmental extremism is starting to irritate me a tad… What about folks who never commute or share a ride to work with a colleague or take the bus?
The hordes of cars during rush hour in Edmonton with the lone driver is more important for public education that some granola’s wish to turn off the lights for an hour.
    Futile attempt with no results.
    Turning of my lights? LOL.
David Suzuki style eco-fascist propaganda again.

You don’t think that the millions of lights around the world turning off for an hour made a difference in consumption?

That’s a lot of oil and coal that wasn’t burned.

“This environmental extremism is starting to irritate me a tad… ”

That’s good, because people who make silly ignorant statements like “David Suzuki style eco-fascist propaganda again” are really starting to irritate me. Lol.

Sheldon is correct in saying that the biggest cause of climate change is coal fired electrical generation (which we here in Alberta are extremely dependant on). One of the tenets of Live Earth was actually a pledge to oppose any new traditional (ie. non “clean”) coal fired powerplants.

So while it’s easier to just pick on the guy driving to the mall in his three quarter tonne dually; if people really want to make a difference we need to look more at our electrical generation. The dually is primarily responsible for gas being $1.20 (and it’s only March), but that’s a different story.

I thought Earth Hour was a great idea (although I am a very large contributor to the WWF, who put on the event, so my opinion is a little biased) and thanks for giving it some attention Sara and Sheldon!

I am not a granola and I did not turn the lights off yesterday… However, I understand the message! It is not about who polluates the least or the most and it is not how much energy we will save after an hour… It is just a reminder that we probably can find a way to close the gap between consumption and over consumption, i.e. pour a glass of water from the tap or wait 2 minutes to pour only because the water is cold enough. A critical mind would think to a solution and fill a jar of water and put it in the fridge so you only take a certain amount of water from the tap without wasting 20 liters for the only reason that water is not cold enough.

I think we need some people like this to remind us the waste we make… and I should be the first one concerned!

    Sheldon, Sara:

This “fencesitter” has jumped off the fence and made an offer on a 2 storey in the SW area. The strategy was to look for good value and also a propetry priced for the future.

Could you please recommend a home inspections company/franchise?

    Thank you!

  8. Sara MacLennan 30. Mar, 2008 at 8:58 pm #

Fence sitter, you should talk to your Realtor about that.

  9. fencesitter 30. Mar, 2008 at 9:50 pm #

Need a second opinion? Is that not allowed?

  10. Nate 30. Mar, 2008 at 9:58 pm #

Opinions from a REALTOR cost $$.

  11. Sheldon Johnston 30. Mar, 2008 at 10:45 pm #

Absolutely it costs big bucks for that kind of info. j/k

The rules to which REALTORS must live by prohibit me or any REALTOR from interfering in an agency relationship or an on going transaction.

I have published a few articles on inspections and guidelines for inspections. Like checking if they have E&O and have WCB coverage among other things.

I turned off my lights after I pulled my Hum V out of the garage. I feel really good about saving the environment.
In all honesty I would love to consume less electricity. I have looked into solar panels, and geothermal, and I can’t afford it as I am paying for my 500 thousand cardboard box.
I guess I could slow down to 140 km/hr on the highway in the Hummer while pulling my Malibu 400hp Wakeboard Boat. At least it is a four stroke.

“I can’t afford it as I am paying for my 500 thousand cardboard box.”

    1. Sell your boat.
    2. Obviously if you term a $1/2 million house a “cardboard box” you are either jealous or a renter. A house of that price is awesome.

House, sorry if you don’t understand the sarcasm, did not mean to offend.

hey Yogi, have you considered the Whipple super charger for your wake boat? You can boost HP up to 500 quite easily and you will burn at least 30% more fuel! Pedal to the metal!
