The Edmonton Housing Trust Fund has purchased a historic building in downtown Edmonton with the hopes of turning it into 50-60 affordable housing units. Located at 105 Ave and 100 St, "Immigration Hall" has gone unused since the ’70s. Great news!
The bad news is it is going to take a ton of work and a lot of time before anyone can actually move into the units. The organization is now asking those interested in renovating the building to put forward proposals for a redevelopment project.
The Immigration Hall opened in the early 1930s and provided food, temporary lodging and settlement to thousands of immigrants coming toEdmonton and northern Alberta.
The Trust Fund hopes thatrenovation work can start by spring or summer of 2008. The facilitywill provide at least 40 transitional housing beds for the city’schronically homeless. It will also provide support services.
